SABEW 2007 Fall Conference
October 20-21, 2007
Chapel Hill, NC

Join the Society of American Business Editors and Writers in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Oct. 20-21, for its Fall Conference. The event will be held at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication on the University of North Carolina campus. To attend the conference, Register Online or Download PDF Form to mail or fax to SABEW. If more than one person from your institution is attending, find out about discount opportunities.

The hotel for the event will be the Carolina Inn, located across the street from the campus. Click here for travel and hotel information.

The keynote speakers will include J.P. Garnier, chief executive officer of giant drug company GlaxoSmithKline, which has a huge presence in the nearby Research Triangle Park. The outspoken Garnier has been a critic of the media’s coverage of the pharmaceutical industry. LabCorp CEO David King will also speak during the conference.

North Carolina industry includes major centers for banking, insurance, biotechnology and software, and the conference will likely include sessions touching on all of these sectors as well as business journalism topics such as the launch of Fox Business Channel and better blogging and section designs. Chapel Hill itself boasts three hedge funds, each managing more than $1 billion in money for investors, as well as the home store for noted clothing designer Alexander Julian.

In addition, the School of Journalism is planning a two-day Business Journalism Boot Camp, Business Journalism 101, on Oct. 18-19 for those attending the SABEW Fall Conference. The boot camp, which will include professors from both the School and the nationally ranked Kenan-Flagler Business School on campus, is free, but you must also register for the Fall Conference. The Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau web site http://www.chocvb.org/ lists a number of restaurants and night clubs within walking distance of the UNC campus and the Carolina Inn. Anything with a Franklin Street address is a 5-10 minute walk.

Dress: Temperatures will likely range from lows in the 40s at night to highs in the 70s during the days. October is a wonderful time to be in Chapel Hill. Business casual attire is preferred at the workshop.

Note that UNC will be on fall break during this weekend, so the campus will be relatively quiet and the downtown area devoid of college-age revelry.
