What We Offer

SABEW offers an ever-growing spectrum of services to its members, including:

Awards/contests
  • The Distinguished Achievement Award, which is presented to outstanding business journalists annually.
  • The Best in Business Contest, which highlights overall excellence in newspaper business sections,weekly business journals and wire services. The News contest rewards superior coverage of a breaking news and enterprise stories.

Education
  • An Annual Conference that includes workshops and field trips aimed at exposing SABEW members to new ideas in business and economic journalism, as well as speeches made by major business newsmakers.
  • Specialized conferences that also feature workshops designed to enhance members’ skills and expose them to new ideas in business journalism. Topics in personal finance and business reporting and writing have been the focus of the organization in recent years.
  • SABEW Student Reporting Project, during which selected students report on the annual conference. Stories are placed on SABEW's web site and published in The Business Journalist, SABEW's official newsletter.
  • SABEW Endowed Chair in Business and Financial Journalism at the Missouri School of Journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The SABEW Chair will develop business journalism curricula for undergraduate, graduate and mid-career programs in business journalism. The SABEW Endowed Chair is Martha "Marty" Steffens.
  • State Press Association Business Journalism Boot Camps

Networking
  • A Resume Bank into and from which members can make deposits or withdrawals.
  • A World Wide Web site www.sabew.org that hosts stories on hot topics in business journalism, job listings, contest information and registration materials for conferences and specialty workshops.
  • Listserv for members to share business journalism tips and new resources.
  • A discussion area called TalkBiz, an electronic bulletin board.

Publications
  • A bimonthly newsletter, The Business Journalist, which features articles designed to improve the quality of business and economic reporting and to inform members about industry trends.
  • An online, searchable membership directory
